Château La Grave Figeac Saint-Émilion Grand Cru 2019
Château La Grave Figeac, a hidden gem in Saint-Emilion, has a lot to offer: a beautiful location, a small but dynamic vineyard, family management, and 10 years of organic certification.
Covering just 6.5 hectares, half of it shares borders with Château Cheval Blanc. Owned by the Clauzel family for 30 years, it’s now run by Laurent and Caroline.
About Chateau Figeac
Château La Grave Figeac converted to organic farming in 2009 under owner/winemaker Laurent Clauzel. Located at the border of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol on sandy clay and gravel soils over the limestone, it neighbors Cheval Blanc and Figeac in Saint-Emilion and La Conseillante in Pomerol. With an average vine age of 45 years, harvesting is done by hand and fermentations are with wild yeasts with no SO2 added until later. The commitment of M. Clauzel to organic agriculture has resulted in a dramatic increase in quality, beginning with the very pretty 2014 vintage.
Surrounded by the châteaux of Cheval Blanc, Figeac and La Conseillante in Pomerol, this 6.5ha estate on sandy, gravelly soil is a jewel, and well up to most Cru Classé estates in quality. One hectare of the cabernet franc vines is 100yo which definitely plays its part, as does the biodynamic viticulture. Sensitively aged in one third each of new oak, one year old barrels and cuve, yields around 35hh are very low for the appellation.
